Indian stock markets extended their losing streak for the third consecutive session on Tuesday, May 20, as both the Sensex and Nifty 50 faced sharp declines amid mixed global signals and growing concerns over inflated valuations. The Sensex slumped by 873 points, closing at 81,186.44, while the Nifty 50 dropped by 262 points to end the day at 24,683.90, marking a fall of over 1% for both benchmarks.

The market downturn was widespread, with significant selling pressure observed across various sectors. Broader indices were not spared either, as the BSE Midcap index fell 1.65% and the Smallcap index declined by 0.96%. The sharp drop wiped off nearly ₹6 lakh crore in investor wealth, reducing the combined market capitalization of BSE-listed companies from ₹444 lakh crore to ₹438 lakh crore in just one session.

Tuesday’s market crash was largely driven by global unease following Moody’s downgrade of the US credit rating, coupled with institutional profit booking after a recent rally. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net sellers, adding to the bearish sentiment. Heavyweight stocks like HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries bore the brunt of the sell-off, dragging down both the Sensex and Nifty50, as cautious investors chose to lock in gains amid uncertain global cues.
